British Photography Award Winning Photo 2023

The photo below was winner of the Documentary Photographer award at the British Photography Awards 2023.

Description given to the judging panel:

A Just Stop Oil activist is arrested after spraying the front of an Aston Martin dealership with orange paint from a fire extinguisher. The incident happened during a weekend of climate activist action in the capital. I was in Hyde Park, across the road, photographing more peaceful demonstrations when I overheard talk between protesters that a car dealership on Mayfair had been targeted. I had already spotted several police vehicles tearing down Mayfair, so pinpointed the location and ran over there in time to find the aftermath: the activist being held by several officers, while others managed the traffic. The young person had made quite a mess — which, of course, was the point. I captured some closer shots too, but felt that this wide tableau best captured the moment.
