AI Policy
Like many photographers, I’m concerned about the increasing presence of Artificial Intelligence in the editing of photographs.
As a documentary photographer recording significant events, I feel it’s particularly important to set out my position.
To me, the following are acceptable and unacceptable uses of AI in my work.
Acceptable uses:
-
Minor denoising
- Minor perspective correction
- Minor object removal (lens dust, minor clutter on edge of frame)
- Removal of photographer’s shadow or reflection (though I often leave this in!)
- Quick selection (e.g. using AI to select the subject or the sky for editing)
Unacceptable uses:
- Generative AI — creation of material not present in the original image
- Restorative AI — creation of material obscured or lost in the original image
Any photograph of mine may have been edited using AI in an ‘acceptable’ way, but will never have been edited in an ‘unacceptable’ way.
In this way, my photos are always a true reflection of what was seen by the eye.
Thanks.
