STORIES

Holy Week, Granada

In many areas of Spain and Hispanic America, the Christian Holy Week before Easter is marked with elaborate street processions. In Granada, Andalusia, thousands lined the streets on Sunday 11 May 2025 to witness a sombre procession, as 'costaleros' (or, sack men) — symbolic penitents from local brotherhoods — carried a processional float bearing a Corpus Christi (body of Christ) image through the streets. Numerous processions of this kind take place during Holy Week. The slow-moving processions last for several hours, representing penitence and holy dedication for the participants.

A young man stands in position and awaits the beginning of the Corpus Christi procession, a long staff-like candle in his hand.

Three young people carry processional torches topped with candles near the beginning of the Corpus Christi procession.

A teenage boy waves a thurible (incense burner) as he walks ahead of the Corpus Christi float.

A group of 'costaleros', brotherhood penitents, stand ready to carry the Corpus Christi float. Several groups of costaleros work in shifts to carry the heavy float through Granada's streets for several hours through the hot afternoon.

A spectator in blue looks ahead of the processional route as the first participants approach.

Two men light a processional candle that has blown out during the Corpus Christi procession, as three spectators watch on from the pavement.

A spectator looks ahead at the passing procession as a band of musicians passes behind her.

Two men — a participant and a spectator — embrace during the Corpus Christi procession.

The Corpus Christi float passes through a narrow residential street, Calle San Jerónimo, on its final approach to the procession's end at Catedral de Granada.
